André Michaux’s 1793 Expedition to the Pacific and America’s First Diplomatic Crisis

​

Summary: In 1793 Thomas Jefferson and the American Philosophical Society became entangled in a natural history/political debacle which involved sending an ambitious French botanist named Andre Michaux on an expedition to the Pacific, which, had it been successful, would have all but made the Lewis and Clark expedition a decade later, unwarranted, or, at best, a historical footnote. Jefferson and the American Philosophical Society issued instructions to Michaux that are remarkably similar to the instructions later given to Lewis and Clark. But just when Michaux was set to head off on his expedition, French Minister Plenipotentiary, one "Citizen" Genet, arrived on the scene and pulled Michaux into a covert spy mission that made everything much more complicated.
